Window Treatments

Cascade

A cascade is a zigzag or waterfall-shaped fabric piece that falls at the sides of a window treatment, similar to jabots but typically longer and with a more pronounced folded pattern. Cascades add dramatic vertical interest to formal window treatments, often extending from cornice level to the floor. The distinctive folded shape of cascades creates visual rhythm along window edges, revealing contrast linings with each fold. While highly traditional, cascades can be simplified for transitional interiors by reducing the fold depth or using more contemporary fabrics.

Key Characteristics

  • Zigzag or waterfall shape
  • Falls at window sides
  • Long, dramatic proportions
  • Reveals contrast lining
  • Creates vertical rhythm
  • Formal, elegant effect

Types & Variations

Full cascade (floor length)
Short cascade (sill length)
Double cascade (overlapping)
Handkerchief cascade (pointed ends)
Relaxed cascade (softer folds)

Placement & Usage Tips

Cascades look best on taller windows where their length can be appreciated. Mount starting point high enough that the cascade adds perceived height. Ensure cascades do not obstruct furniture or doorways.

💡 Pro Tip

The number of folds in a cascade should be odd (3, 5, or 7) for the most pleasing visual effect. Each fold reveals the lining fabric, so consider the color proportion between face fabric and lining.
