PH Lamp

The PH Lamp series was designed by Danish designer Poul Henningsen beginning in 1925 for Louis Poulsen, based on his systematic study of how to create glare-free, warm artificial light. The PH system uses multiple concentric shades—calculated using logarithmic spirals—that reflect and diffuse light downward while hiding the bulb from view at all angles. The PH 5 pendant (1958) and PH Artichoke (1958) are among the most celebrated lighting designs in history, combining scientific rigor with sculptural beauty. Henningsen's PH lamps transformed how designers and homeowners think about lighting quality. Rather than simply illuminating a room, PH lamps shape light to create atmosphere—warm, inviting, and flattering to both people and interiors. The PH 5 remains the most popular pendant in Denmark, hanging over dining tables in homes across the country. The PH Artichoke, with its 72 individual leaves, creates a spectacular play of direct and reflected light that makes it a chandelier-level centerpiece. Both designs prove that great lighting design is both art and science.

💡 Pro Tip

PH lamps are designed to work without visible bulbs from any angle. Use the recommended bulb wattage and type for each model—the shade geometry is calculated for specific light sources. The warm, glare-free quality transforms the mood of a room more than almost any other single design element.
